By a process of elimination, it was decided that the contamination had probably been in some fast food the family had picked up on a day trip to Whangarei. Fler breathed a sigh of relief, but she had little time to savour it, for an influx of weekenders arrived before lunch on Saturday, and because Rae and some of the part-time staff were involved in the wedding at the marae she was rushed off her feet.

The children had stopped being sick but she was carrying a tray of specially prepared light food upstairs when Kyle waylaid her.

‘Can I take that?’ he offered.

‘No, I want to talk to the mother, anyway.’

‘When will you have time to talk to me?’ he asked her.

Harrassed and tired, she said, ‘Leave me alone, Kyle!’

He drew back as if she’d hit him. ‘Of course,’ he said coolly. ‘If that’s what you want.’

She hesitated, caught by something in his face, but he turned from her and continued on down the stairs, and after a moment she carried on up them.
